To Fit or Not To Fit?

Creating Comfort, Confidence and Harmony

When we welcome animals into our lives, we take on the responsibility of caring for them — not just feeding and sheltering them, but truly understanding them. One of the most overlooked parts of that care is fit. Whether it’s horse tack, dog collars, or everyday accessories, how something fits can make a world of difference to an animal’s comfort, behaviour, and overall wellbeing.

Animals may not be able to tell us in words when something doesn’t feel right, but they communicate constantly through body language, behaviour, and subtle changes. Ill-fitting tack or accessories can cause discomfort, rubbing, pressure points, frustration, and even anxiety. Over time, this can affect trust and connection — the very things we work so hard to build.

The Impact of Poor Fit

Many of us have experienced the frustration of choosing between sizes that just don’t quite work. Too tight in one spot, too loose in another. For horses, this can mean bridles that rub, nosebands that are too tight, or halters that are too tight or too loose, and this can cause many issues for both your horse and you. For dogs, collars that twist, rub, or sit incorrectly can cause irritation or restrict movement.

Common signs of discomfort can include:

  • Resistance/avoidance or aggression when being tacked up or collared

  • Rubbing, hair loss, or sore spots

  • Changes in behaviour or attitude

  • Restlessness or tension

Often, these signs are misunderstood or attributed to training issues, when in reality, it can be easily just the equipment simply doesn’t fit the animal properly.

Every Animal Is an Individual

Just like people, no two animals are exactly the same. Breed standards and generic sizing charts don’t account for individual shapes, builds, or proportions. Many animals fall “between sizes,” which can make finding comfortable, functional gear difficult and costly.

This is something I know all too well. My horse, Boss, sits right between standard cob and full sizes — a common but frustrating position to be in. That challenge is what led me to start making custom tack in the first place.

Why Custom Fit Makes a Difference

Custom-fitted gear allows for:

  • Greater comfort and freedom of movement

  • Reduced pressure and rubbing

  • Improved communication and trust

  • A calmer, more confident animal

When animals feel comfortable, they’re more relaxed. When they’re relaxed, connection comes naturally. That’s where harmony truly begins — between ears, and between partners.

Harmony Between Ears

At Harmony BE, I believe that love, understanding, and comfort are the foundation of every human–animal relationship. You and your animal are a team, whether you’re working, competing, adventuring, or simply enjoying quiet moments together.

My goal is to create products that are quality-made, custom designed, custom fitted, comfortable and kind — while still being affordable and easy to use. Because good fit shouldn’t be a luxury; it should be the standard.

Final Thoughts

Taking the time to ensure your tack or accessories fit properly is one of the simplest yet most meaningful ways to care for your animal. It’s an investment in their comfort, their confidence, and your partnership together.

If you’re ever unsure about fit, or feel like something just isn’t quite right, trust that instinct. Listening — really listening — is how we build harmony in unity.

Thanks for joining me on this journey to achieve harmony in unity!
