Some people believe a heart horse arrives with fireworks.

That you will know instantly. That everything will click straight away. That the bond will be perfect, effortless, magical and obvious from the very beginning.

But sometimes, a once-in-a-heart horse does not arrive like that at all.

Sometimes they arrive quietly.

They challenge you. They frustrate you. They mirror things in you that you did not realise were sitting so close to the surface. They test your patience, make you question yourself, make you laugh when you want to cry, and occasionally act like a butterfly crossing the track is a full-blown emergency situation.

And then, somewhere between the hard days, the soft eyes, the tiny wins, the deep breaths and the ridiculous moments, they sneak in.

People imagine the instant connection, the perfect partnership, the horse that understands everything from day one, the calm rides, the magical moments and the feeling that it was “meant to be” right from the start.

Sometimes that happens.

But sometimes the reality is much messier.

Sometimes your once-in-a-heart horse is the one who pushes every button you have. The one who makes you stop and think. The one who reacts in a way that makes no sense at first, until later you realise, “Ahh, okay. That is why you did that.”

Sometimes they are not easy.

Sometimes they are sensitive, dramatic, quirky, cranky, unsure, funny, bold one minute and convinced a butterfly is an air piranha the next.

Sometimes they do not feel like your heart horse straight away.

Sometimes they become your heart horse slowly, through all the little moments you only understand when you look back.

One of the most honest parts of having a horse like this is the way they mirror you.

Not always gently, either.

There are days when your horse reflects something back at you so clearly that you cannot ignore it. You might walk into the paddock thinking you are fine, only to find your horse cranky, pushy, unsettled or completely out of sorts.

And then it hits you.

“Oh my. I am cranky.”

That is the thing about sensitive horses. They often feel what we are carrying before we have fully admitted it to ourselves.

They pick up on tension, frustration, tiredness, stress, sharpness and the little changes in us that we try to brush off. They do not care about the story we are telling ourselves. They respond to what is actually there.

It can be confronting.

It can also be a gift.

Because sometimes your horse is not being difficult. Sometimes they are showing you what you brought into the paddock with you.

And if you are willing to listen, they can teach you a lot about softness, patience, honesty and the importance of taking a breath before you ask anything of them.

When a horse chooses to be with you, there is something incredibly special

happening beneath the surface.

Horses are prey animals. Their whole body is designed to notice, react, move and survive. They are always reading the world around them — the sounds, the movement, the energy and the changes we often miss completely.

Safety is not just something they like.

It is built into who they are.

In a herd, awareness is shared. They watch, listen and feel together. If one horse senses danger, the others can react in an instant. They are deeply tuned into each other and their environment.

So when a horse learns that you are a safe place, that matters.

When they choose to stand with you, soften beside you, breathe out, graze near you, rest near you or simply stay, it is not a small thing.

Sometimes they are so quiet that, if you are waiting for something dramatic, you might miss them.

Boss will often stand with me and gently sniff my hands with both nostrils, as though he is reading the story of where I have been and what I am carrying that day. Then he will lick my hand or arm, sometimes for five or ten minutes straight, yawning in between, with soft eyes and a calm, quiet demeanour.

To someone else, it might just look like a horse being a little odd.

To me, it feels like a conversation.

No pressure. No performance. No perfect moment staged for a photo.

Just him, choosing to be there with me. Processing, softening, relaxing and reminding me that trust does not always arrive loudly.

Sometimes it shows up as a soft eye, a warm breath, a yawn and a horse who decides you are safe enough to stay beside.

When They Choose Your Space

Another quiet sign is the way they choose your space.

Boss will often follow me around, not because he has to, but because he wants to

know where I am and what I am doing. Sometimes, if he is wandering around freely and I am sitting down, he will simply wander over and stand near me.

He does not always need anything.

He is not always asking for food, scratches or attention.

Sometimes he just hangs around.

And there is something incredibly special about that.

When a horse is free to walk away, but chooses to come closer, it says something. It may not look like much to someone watching from the outside, but to me, it feels like trust. It feels like comfort. It feels like being chosen in the quietest, simplest way.

For an animal whose whole being is built around safety, movement and awareness, choosing to stop and relax near you is an incredible compliment.

It means they feel safer with you.

And honestly, that is one of the most amazing feelings in the world.

The Funny, Honest, Ridiculous Bits

Of course, once-in-a-heart horses are not all deep emotional lessons and soulful moments.

Sometimes they are ridiculous.

Sometimes they spook at butterflies.

Sometimes they stare into the distance like they have seen a ghost, when apparently a leaf three paddocks away may have considered moving.

Sometimes they are dramatic little dragons.

Sometimes they are cranky, cheeky, opinionated, sensitive, hilarious and completely committed to the role of paddock actor.

And somehow, those ridiculous moments become part of why you love them so much.

Because love is not just built in the perfect moments.

It is built in the real ones.

The muddy ones. The frustrating ones. The “why are you like this?” ones. The quiet ones. The funny ones. The days where they test every bit of patience you own, and the days where you look at them and think, “Man, how did I get so lucky?”

The Realisation

I have had Boss for almost six years now.

It has been hard work some days. There have been moments of frustration, learning, questioning, adjusting and trying again. But I have also had the privilege of watching him grow into the amazing creature he is today.

And somewhere along the way, he crept up and snuck into my heart when I was not looking.

He made himself quite comfortable in there before I really noticed just how much I loved him.

Most days, I tell him he is the best thing I have seen all day. I thank him for being him. Not for being perfect. Not for behaving. Not for being easy.

Just for being Boss.
